How to install a refrigerator water filter (step by step)
Replacing a refrigerator water filter takes a few minutes when you have the right part. Work over a towel — a little water usually spills when the old cartridge comes out.
Before you start
- Buy the filter that matches the code on the old cartridge or your fridge model — lookup guide.

- Have a towel and a pitcher ready for flushing.

Step-by-step
1. Locate the filter housing
Common spots: grille at the base, ceiling of the fresh-food section, or interior sidewall. Your manual shows the exact location.
2. Remove the old filter
Turn or push per the arrows on the housing until it unlocks. Pull straight out. Expect a brief drip.
3. Install the new filter
Remove protective caps. Align the cartridge, push firmly, and twist or click until locked. Do not force a filter that will not seat — you may have the wrong part.
4. Flush the water line
Dispense 2–4 gallons (or the volume printed on the box) into a pitcher or sink. Cloudy water at first is normal.
5. Reset the filter light

6. Discard the first ice
If you have an ice maker, dump the first few batches after a filter change.
FAQ
Do I need to shut off the water supply?
Usually no for twist-in fridge cartridges. Shut off the supply only if your manual requires it or you are replacing an inline filter.
Why won’t the new filter lock in?
Wrong part family (for example LT700P vs LT1000P) or incomplete insertion. Compare LG LT1000P vs LT700P or GE RPWFE vs XWFE.
How often should I repeat this?
About every 6 months — replacement schedule.
