How to reset a refrigerator water filter light

Updated July 18, 2026 · waterguidehowto

After you install a new refrigerator water filter, the filter light on the door usually stays on until you reset it. The reset is brand-specific — here is how to clear it on the most common fridges.

How to reset the filter light

  1. Install the new filter fully until it locks or clicks into place.
  2. Run 1–2 gallons of water through the dispenser to flush carbon fines (water may look cloudy at first).
  3. Use the brand-specific reset below until the indicator turns green or turns off.
  4. If the light returns within days, reseat the filter and confirm you used the correct part number.

Samsung

Press and hold Ice Type (or Filter Reset) for about 3 seconds until the light resets. On some Family Hub models, open Settings → Fridge Manager → Water Filter → Reset.

Common Samsung parts: HAF-CIN / DA29-00020B, HAF-QIN.

LG

Press and hold Water Filter Reset (often on the dispenser panel) for 3–5 seconds. Some French-door models use Ice Plus + Light together.

See LG LT1000P vs older LT700P.

GE & Café

Press and hold Reset Filter (or Water Filter) for 3 seconds. On older models, the button may sit behind the grille or next to the dispenser.

Popular GE filters: RPWFE, XWFE. Compare them in GE RPWFE vs XWFE.

Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag (EveryDrop)

Press and hold Filter Reset (sometimes labeled Water Filter) for 3 seconds. On some models you press Lock + Measured Fill together.

Common EveryDrop codes: EDR1RXD1, EDR4RXD1. Full series overview: Whirlpool EveryDrop filter guide.

FAQ

How often should I replace the filter before resetting?

Most brands recommend every 6 months or about 200 gallons. See how often to replace a fridge water filter.

Does resetting without replacing the filter hurt anything?

It only clears the reminder. Filtration still declines if the media is spent, so reset after installing a new filter.

Why is my water cloudy after a new filter?

Air and carbon dust are normal for the first few gallons. Flush until the water runs clear.
